The danger of relying too heavily on this templated approach is that you end up with ill-fitting studies. Worse, you risk devaluing your own expertise. If the job is just about applying a sequence of templates, you signal to stakeholders that a researcher can be replaced by a checklist, or, in the modern context, by an AI.

- Decision heuristics: Rules of thumb grounded in experience, not just theoretical knowledge
- Stakeholder fluency: The ability to translate between research language and business language
- Comfort with ambiguity: Real data is messy; your job is to find the signal
This is what a no-nonsense approach to research looks like. Not adherence to perfect processes that exist only in marketing materials, but the craft of doing rigorous work within real-world constraints.
The AI Context
You might wonder why foundational knowledge matters in the age of AI, when tools can transcribe, summarize, and analyze at scale.
AI is a fantastic tool that can increase the quality and speed of our work. It helps with labor-intensive tasks like transcription and data analysis.
However, a tool is only as good as the person who wields it. AI's output is only useful up to the point where you generally understand what you are doing and can properly guide and evaluate what it produces.
AI does not free you from the non-linear, abstract thinking this job demands. You still need to build foundational knowledge first.
Moving Forward
The path forward is not more templates or more tools. It is deeper understanding of the fundamentals:
- Why research methods work the way they do
- How to adapt them to specific contexts
- When to break rules and when to follow them
